Burgess Hill U3A: Notes
This Web site is under construction.
I am giving priority to providing useful information to Burgess Hill U3A
members. Photographs and prettiness can come later.
The main information source for Burgess Hill U3A members is
the paper newsletter NewsLink: News and Views of Burgess Hill U3A.
NewsLink carries fuller information than can appear on this Web site,
which is constrained by privacy considerations.
Burgess Hill U3A group leaders are invited to send short announcements for
the Notice Board page to the Webmaster (see
Contact Us).
If the text of your announcement includes any of the following:
- telephone numbers
- electronic mail addresses
- addresses (URLs) of private Web sites
- postal addresses of private houses
please ensure that the owner of the information (number or address)
agrees to it appearing on the Web.
I suggest that postal addresses of private houses never appear on this Web site.Telephone numbers, electronic mail addresses and Web addresses
have a useful role to play, provided their owners agree to their use.
Possible consequences of putting personal information on the Web include:
- Telephone numbers:
Receipt of unwanted telephone calls.
- Electronic mail addresses:
Receipt of unwanted electronic mail including, as extreme cases,
email messages bearing computer viruses,
and phishing messages: email messages which are designed to trick you
into revealing details of your bank account.
- Web site addresses:
Increased Web traffic, leading to increased bills from the Web hosting
company.
Misuse of the information contained on a private Web site.
- Postal addresses:
Unwanted visitors, including perhaps burglars.
I recommend the Computer Nasties page in the members' section
of the Third Age Trust Web site;
it explains succinctly what you can do to avoid some of the pitfalls
of modern computer usage.
